sitar

sitar is the combination of two words, sih + tar, which means 'three strings'.it is predicted that the evolution of Sitar was by 3000 years ago.
a sitar can have 18,19 or 20 strings which of 6 or 7 run over curved, raised frets and the remaining are sympathetic strings.the frets are movable for allowing fine tuning.the instruments has 2 brigdes: the large bridge for playing and the small bridge for sympathetic strings.the bridges arefixed to main resonating chamber at the base of the instrument, some sitars also have a secondary resonator near the top of the hollow neck.teak wood is the material used in construction which is a variation of mahogany for the neck and face plate and gourds for resonating chambers.it's bridges are made up of deer horn, ebony or even sometimes from camel bone.

the instrument is balanced between the player's left foot and right knee.the hands move freely without to carry any of the instruments weight.it is very decorative instrument which is very popular in whole india.
